15 miles on the bay trail in San Francisco.  Pretty sore today, probably the miles last week announcing evidence of my stupidity.

I spent some time this week thinking about my running this year.  I get just as much a reward from the trail runs, long runs, runs with other friends and spontanes runs on trips that i know I cannot simply train to race this summer.  I'm going to run.  That means running what my heart wants regardless of what races may come up.  It probably means "running through" a few marathons this next month or so instead of specific training for them.

I got accepted into the National Masters Marathon Championships in Twin in October.  that means getting into shape finally in late summer for a real race.

Running for fun is a keep to having longevity doing it!

Congrats on the Master's championship, it was a fun experience for me a few years ago.

I'm trying to understand your point. Are you saying that training in an intelligent manner where you build in adequate rest and recovery can't be fun and rewarding?

I don't see it as an either-or proposition.

Here's what I mean. After some consistency in training and racing I think you have an idea of what you can run. Let's say that I feel that I can run a 2:27 marathon, if my training is on, weight is on target, sleep has been good, etc. A real training plan for a race right on the edge of your endurance is a four month plan. You can't train like this year round, year after year. You have to peak and ebb. You have to enjoy it.

For some reason I can take 100 mile training weeks this year, indicating that I am getting some things right. I recover pretty quick each week. I know about where my best pace would be for a 10k, half and full marathon. I also know that I am not close to that in fitness and am about ready to begin a four month training cycle. To begin that I feel it's best, for me, to start hitting some 120 mile weeks and start climbing the first part of the cycle-base mileage.

That means "running through" some marathons in the next few months, not looking for time. It also means that I can do what I love, some serious trail running miles. On the flip side the stinking twinkies gotta go..

BTW, sold the watch for $279 and got my Asics shoes in the mail today. Sweet swag!

I like your philosophy. If your goal is 120s I need to at least get over 100.

Where did you sell your watch for $279? Ebay? As luck would have it, they gave me the women's version and I had to give my mom the asics for mother's day.

Yep, Ebay. I'm always amazed that people will buy something like that for 20 bucks less than they can get it in a store.

I get what you're saying Steve. But, as I've said before, I believe you are on the verge of a real breakthrough in your running. When you say "you can't train like that year after year", you may be right, but you can train like that for a while.

If you believe you have it in you to run a 2:27, you owe it to yourself to try and make it happen.

I believe you can find the right balance.

Rob, your support has meant a great deal to me the past year. Thanks.
