Today is my start of training, time to run!  With a few days in Costa Rica I hit the soft trails South of San Jose.  This is a really slow (9+ min pace) long run.  It was good to see that I can still do these, although slow and a bit painful.  It does set a benchmark for me to start from.  Ogden marathon is my training goal so it's crunch time.  Checked out my weight too, and at 165 I have some work cut out for me...

Here's a pic of the usual gear I take on central America trails, hiking or running.

Also, the Talamanca Trail that I'm covering.

Weight issues...

OH, FUNNY!

But did you really just "start training" with a 20 miler?

From Steve on Mon, Mar 04, 2013 at 15:30:27 from 198.60.8.33

Yeah, but I was so slow it was more like hiking. I think it's a good way to start building strength. If I did fast short workouts right now, I think I would injure out. Hopefully some junk miles will lean me out and strengthen my ankle issues.

Gotta love to run in an area where you need to carry a gun!

I guess Yellowstone National Park may not be much different, except the bullet would not necessarily stop the bear!

Not those bullets at least, that would be like shooting a BB gun at a Griz! :-)

That's why I like treadmills... I can keep my gun in the drink holder.

From Steve on Mon, Mar 04, 2013 at 16:38:48 from 198.60.8.33

Yeah, guns are worthless for bears. That's what pepper spray is for. The gun is for humans. No way I'm going to be out there anymore by myself, too many close calls in Mexico especially. It encourages the very rare, opportunistic, person you don't want following you, to leave you alone.

Plus, you can't believe how much braver you are running at night. :-)

It looks like a beautiful place to run! You get a lot of awesome running experiences that most of us never will. My favorite though is still you running Rim to Rim by yourself at night the week of Ogden...classic!

That was fun. Are you running Ogden with me this year?

From RileyCook on Fri, Mar 08, 2013 at 17:34:05 from 65.130.90.139

Yeah I am running Ogden! Should be fun, hopefully you don't see/hear me yakking again like last time I attempted Ogden! haha
