What a fun weekend!  The most I got out of Boston was that the best marathon experience is as a team.  Man was that cool!  I felt as ready for this marathon as any I've ran, great mileage, great speed and a nice taper.  In the groove.  What a humbler...it's like that scene from Knights Tale where he says, "You've been weighed, measured and found wanting".  I hit the 5k just about dead on goal, 18:14.  I was drenched already.  The 10k was right on 37, still conservative and planning on using the fuel later.  By now I was taking two waters and a Gatorade at every water stop.  A first for me.  I started having a harder time and couldn't make the planned shift to a quicker pace.  Jeff and Walter caught up to me, passed and I adjusted my time back 30 seconds a mile.  I didn't feel the pace was a problem, it was just suffering!  I'm not used to just the total feeling of suffering.  Pretty much think I've trained for the leg pain, but I have no mental toughness for the heat part.  I came through the half and from then on I decided to quit after the next two miles.  When I reached that point, it wasn't getting any worse, so I decided to quit after the next two miles.  This went on until cresting Heartbreak Hill and I realized that I could finish this.  Best feeling I've had in a long time.  Better than the finish.  Around mile 23 I looked over at the guy next to me and it was Walter, so I told him we should stick it out and finish under 3 hours.  He doesn't remember any of this... The race was a surprise, a mixture of not being prepared for the heat part of it and learning I need some mental toughness.

Guys and gals run in heat like this all the time around the world and kick $%&@.  especially trail runners.  We road racers need to suck it up.

Other highlights:  Awesome race dinner the Shadleys set up.  Great times flying to the race and spending time with Walter and Rob, both guys that basically taught me how to run.  I kissed two Wellesley girls, one with a sign that said, "kiss me, I'm naked', and one with a sign that said, "kiss me, it's my last year, I'm a senior".  How many times does that happen at the halfway point of a marathon? :)  My arm is sore from all the high fives.  I missed the transvestite and Santa Claus, but I did beat the guy in the monkey suit.

Yeah Steve! Great race man! Especially loved the race report:)

steve you are the man. loved following you guys from the comfort of my office at work. it was a tad chilly when I went for a run up river trail- too bad you couldn't send me some of that nice warm air you guys had! and the best part is you didn't freeze waiting for the start like I did when I ran in the northeasterner in 2007. Boston is one schizophrenic town my friend.

From Jon on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 20:06:48 from 74.177.96.130

Man, your last sentence alone made the race worth it!

Glad you toughed it out for the finish. You'll only remember the fun soon, not the pain.

And yeah- moving from Logan to South Carolina and running mid-summer trail races is tough. But Boston 2004 in the heat was one of my toughest and worst races ever, so don't shortchange your race today. Hot road marathons are brutal.

I have to second Jon. Truly great experiences by so many on the blog. It is great to see you take it out and put it all on the line and just enjoy this thing we call running. Congratulations.

Wow...Great job in the heat. This will be a great training run for the Ogden eh?

From Superfly on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 21:19:43 from 74.211.21.81

I feel bad for all you guys. What a price to pay... Rest up, regroup and get ready for the next one. That's all we can do after races like this. Good job for grinding it out.

From JPark on Mon, Apr 16, 2012 at 23:37:12 from 174.52.34.169

Definitely sounded like a humbler. It will work to your good though. Great run not withstanding.

From jtshad on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 04:56:32 from 12.189.157.238

Great running with you Steve! Tough conditions out there and you had a great attitude during the race. Watching you pump up the crowds was inspiring!

From Tara on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 07:55:05 from 75.169.147.99

What an overall fun experience! So glad you were able to finish. Nice work!

From MarkP on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 09:19:59 from 75.169.14.5

Way to finish. Anytime a race report has the word "naked" in it, you know it was a good time. Congratulations.

nice job, steve. glad you had a fun weekend in boston. nice job sticking it out in the heat when quitting would have been the easy option.

From Dave S on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 11:14:03 from 69.170.115.216

Good job toughing it out in the heat. This ought to make Ogden feel easy by comparison. Glad the overall experience was good.

From I Just Run on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 13:42:35 from 67.79.11.242

Congradulations on the 47th placing... No small task at Boston, no matter what the conditions!

From Jake K on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 14:23:26 from 50.138.183.237

Tough day out there Steve. Congrats on not quitting and fighting until the very end. A character-building day for all of us!

Sounds like you had some fun and a good overall experience

From Steve on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 17:34:38 from 209.235.31.148

Scott, I love every one of your comments and especially seeing you every now and then on FB. I'm coming over for that Dew.

Steve, thanks. Looking forward to seeing you at some races this summer.

Jon, loved your post. You have some experience in those words. I do think I've found a few things I did wrong. Not in the race but in prep. I don't really think I would have ran anything differnt.

Adam, thanks. Maybe today looking back at the run it's not as enjoyable, but I think I know where to go with it.

Rob, waiting on another treadmill run at the gym :)

Jeff, sometimes having fun is all that's left.

Allie, Jake, IJR, Dave, I guess a good experience is one you were proud of. That's about all I got out of this. Everything I wrote yesterday on my race report notwithstanding, you have to face the fact of racing. We race the clock. Time matters, effort schmeffort, I lost this one. Heat or whatever, I'm going to narrow down why.

From Fritz on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 18:08:34 from 65.116.116.6

I love your attitude. Way to stick out it out and have fun.

From MichelleL on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 20:26:59 from 42.98.255.35

The best part of the Knights Tale is that quote :D I think you'll always look back on this race when you feel like quitting in another race and say, "H3ll no, if I can make it through Boston 2012, there's no way this race is getting me."

From Steve on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 22:03:17 from 66.87.66.27

I like that Michelle. Maybe that will be my new Mantra

From Teena Marie on Tue, Apr 17, 2012 at 22:52:49 from 174.27.199.63

Did you get the Wellesley girls' numbers??? ;)

Your report is making me laugh.

You are AWESOME!!! :)

From scottkeate on Thu, Apr 19, 2012 at 09:33:53 from 216.49.181.254

A tough race and a great report. Your excellent prep for Boston will pay off over the next few months as you hit those times that are a bit more familiar to you. Way to gut it out!

From Rossy on Fri, Apr 20, 2012 at 12:00:27 from 166.250.10.164

Great race and great report Steve! I have been meaning to read it all week, but got busy with tax season. Anyway, well worth the wait. If this race was testing your mental toughness, it must have been extremely awful out there. Anyway, I'm all psyched to run now!
