Real happy with this run!  I tried to decide if I should run this after getting over the flu Wednesday but I really needed to get back into the running.  My brother, a sports therapist, said that I could probably run a good 10k or a half, but in his opinion I wouldn't have the leg strength or recovery to go longer.  He was dead on.

We flew into Phoenix and within 10 minutes the kids were playing in the pool with the cousins and the whole trip was already worth it.  Of course the kids all stayed up playing until midnight so there was only a chance for three hours of sleep, but who gets any more race night anyway?  The next morning, I decided to get in a Tempo workout out of the race along the lines of my brother's recommendation; hit it until mile 15 as fast my goal marathon pace and walk the rest.  At the first, the lead group seemed to be holding back, probably waiting for all the hills that this course has, so I ended up in the lead for the first 6 miles.  It was averaging 5:45 pace.  Mile 10 was 58:23 so we must have slowed a bit.  A runner passed me here doing about 5:30 and then we caught him again near 14.  Mile 15 was 1:28:32 and I was ecstatic to be done for tha day!  I grabbed some water at the aid station and began a slow jog up the hills.  It felt doable so I basically jogged the rest of the marathon instead of the walk.  The first Master passed me about 2 miles from the finish and the lead woman just blazed by for a new course record.

Odd way to run a race, but otherwise I wouldn't have done it.  I just was way too out of sorts.  It felt so good to be back into some races!  Even if I was slow...This just gets in your system.  It also feels good to get into training now for Boston in seven weeks.

Now I'm going to kick my feet up by the pool for a few days

Hey Steve - good job today! That's a good long tempo effort, and you were able to get a long run out of it too. A solid time overall for only trying for half of it!

I think you did the smart thing by not racing this all-out. Besides being sick, it just might have held you back a bit in your workouts leading up to Boston. Now you'll be fresh and ready to train hard and crush it in beantown!

Nice run today...although based on this race I'm not sure I would want you to pace me to a 2:48 marathon! haha Hope you enjoy Phoenix and relaxing in the sun.

Nice job!

A few days? Don't they have school in Logan?

Awesome job Steve! So if we can get you into Boston, will you come run on our Masters team?

:)

Great race, nice workout. A good start for doing well at Boston. Congrats!

Walter, he is in and on our team...right Steve!?!?

Thanks guys! I hope you are right Jake. Andrea, I can't pace worth anything. Someday I need to learn that. Oh wait, I'm too old to learn now..

Walter, Boston sent me an entry a few weeks ago which really surprised me. They wouldn't give me a hotel though, which would have been worth more than an entry, lol! Looking forward to contributing something to your team. I'm a bit nervous about only seven weeks to train.

Awesome! I'm in the same boat. I'll see if I can get intense training in over a 7 week period.

Nice work, Steve! Best of luck to you as you focus on Boston--I'm predicting a new PR. I love that you still ran a 2:48 after hanging things up at 15.

From Fritz on Mon, Feb 20, 2012 at 19:34:04 from 67.182.226.25

Nice job Steve. Jogging the last 11 and still finishing in 2:48 is impressive. Watch out Boston!

From Steve on Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 06:05:18 from 66.87.65.212

I couldn't have run any faster than a 2:48. I really felt that I had enough gas in the tank for 15 miles. I should have just walked the rest. Will I see you at Ogden, Fritz?

From Superfly on Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 12:38:19 from 74.211.21.81

Good job! I've looked at this race before. Kind of looks fun.

From Fritz on Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 13:15:21 from 65.116.116.6

Ogden is definitely on the schedule and I am still undecided on whether I will do the SLC Full or Half. Looks like you are doing Boston/Ogden so I might have to match that by doing the SLC full.

From Steve on Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 17:41:54 from 66.87.64.151

Yep, it's a fun race, but a challenging course. Everyone comments about the elevation profile on the website since it's a mystery where they got it. Another issue that I have, or maybe that I just don't understand, is why race directors cone off tangents on marathon courses that are certified. This course does a lot of 90 degree turns when it gets down to the road portion. I mean a lot. You literally watch the mileage markers getting further and further ahead as you run. I had 26.74 on the Garmin at the finish. Ogden was the same way last year through the canyon. Either cone the course the way it was certified or mileage mark the course the way you force the runners to take it. I'm bad enough at tangents..

Amazing, you went easy the last ten miles and you still got a 2:48.
