I wanted only today to pace a marathon more like what I've been training for.  The open question was if I could do it 5 days after a serious hard effort at Boston.  I was fairly certain the slower race Monday was due to being a wuss.  I just wasn't able to cool down.  The advantage to that was that I felt the slower pace would lend to a quicker recovery.  I did a 2 mile warm up and took stock of how I felt.  It seemed reasonable to aim for a 3 hour marathon and if I felt good, pick it up and run.  The start was fast, Fritz, Seth, John, and Dennis were outa there.  I noticed immediately that a 6 min pace felt great, probably because it was downhill.  I lost touch after maybe three miles with any marathoners after that and settled into what felt good.  Such a nice change from Monday to just enjoy the run.  I passed Dennis and eventually caught up to John about 12 miles.  I was so worried about the heat that I was dumping water on my head at every aid station, but it turned out to be pretty unnecessary.  Through 18 I realized that the pace wasn't taking a toll on me today, I had no idea who was ahead anymore, and began to plan on what to do when anyone tried to pass at 20 or so.  Demetrio yelled at me from an intersection that Dennis was way back and to just hold pace which really helped.  I faded maybe 10 to 20 seconds a mile after 22 and focused on holding some reserves to make a push.  Nobody popped up, thankfully, so I could be lazy.

First time for two marathons in a week for me and a much better feeling about how the conditions in Boston affected me.

I feel better about Boston just after watching you today! :-)

Great run Steve. You looked strong and smooth out there. I think sub 2:30 is in the cards for you... you are running great!

From ACorn on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 14:51:23 from 174.232.138.82

Awesome week of racing Steve! You were looking strong at Liberty Park but I had to do a double take and make sure it was really you racing. Crazy good performance after a Monday marathon!

From Andrea on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 14:55:50 from 67.182.215.126

Wow, this really just goes to show how terrible the Boston conditions were. I'm super impressed with your performance today! Great job!

By being a wuss do you mean "I didn't want to die of heat exhaustion"? 2 marathons down.

From Teena Marie on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 15:17:44 from 68.107.222.43

ARE YOU FOR REAL????

Man alive, Steve!!! I am in complete awe. Seriously ... how in the world????

Beyond awesome!!!

From Smooth on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 15:36:49 from 174.27.212.157

I was in awe to see you finish so smooth and strong! You were the buzz among the volunteers and crowd I was standing by! Everyone who knew you had run Boston on Monday was so in awe of you! You probably didn't hear me screaming my heads off...neither did Fritz! Holy Cow! You are INCREDIBLE!!! :)

From Superfly on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 16:16:24 from 74.211.21.81

That's crazy awesome. I used to think the guys who ran TOU and then STG two weeks later were nuts... this takes the cake.

Good job!

Now Dennis knows he can't beat you even five days after a marathon!

From allie on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 16:33:48 from 97.126.212.58

i was surprised to see you at the start line this morning, but at the same time i wasn't. :)

great race, steve.

From steve ash on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 17:22:39 from 50.8.121.33

Dang.. That is way cool that you were able to bounce back so quickly and do so well. Makes my week look rather puny in comparison..

From Brent on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 17:28:47 from 209.33.247.203

Don't spit into the wind, don't pull on superman's cape, without Croce - I would bet Kriptonight would not phase you, ditto, great - 10,000 commando points

Stay Kool, B of BS Rools out

What is really impressive, the SL marathon course is a dog course, with 5th east - what a time on that course a just a few days

Two Marathons in less than a week, and then pulling a time like that out there for the second is just astonishing.

From Fritz on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 20:28:42 from 67.182.226.25

Looks like you ran a very smart race and finished with a great time. Interesting how good races can end up if you start conservatively. I might have to try that. Who is Dennis? ok, that was a joke.

All I can say is...STUD!

From Steve on Sat, Apr 21, 2012 at 22:34:43 from 66.87.66.1

Ah, that was a lot of fun reading your comments, thanks everyone! Fun race. I've run all over the country and never felt the "thing" we got going here right now. All I can add to any of the above is that if I ran any race at a pace approaching what Fritz, Ben, Jake, or some of these guys run, I'd be dead for a year.

From Rob on Sun, Apr 22, 2012 at 12:04:54 from 198.228.212.173

Sorry you missed your goal time by almost 23 minutes, that can be really frustrating, but hey it happens, I'm sure you'll bounce back.

From Paul on Sun, Apr 22, 2012 at 14:44:05 from 71.208.141.66

You're crazy. But great job.

From Scott Ensign on Sun, Apr 22, 2012 at 14:56:52 from 70.58.98.172

From James on Sun, Apr 22, 2012 at 16:34:56 from 174.23.151.40

Excellent masters win and comeback run after Boston. That is some pretty quick recovery!

From Dan Varga on Sun, Apr 22, 2012 at 17:57:15 from 174.27.234.106

Congrats on the masters win and 3rd overall! I agree with Rob, you should hold to your expected goal pace better.

From Rob on Sun, Apr 22, 2012 at 20:40:49 from 204.15.86.95

I would suggest getting more training miles in at goal Marathon pace to get your body accustom to running at that pace. You may also want to consider throwing in a mid-week Marathon on Wednesday or Thursday next time. I have no doubt that your goal of 3 hours will come. Keep up the good work.

From scottkeate on Fri, May 04, 2012 at 15:35:55 from 216.49.181.254

I looked for you after the race, because I wanted to slug you in the arm. How many people do you know that use Boston as a warm up for SLC? And 5 days earlier. Great work!

You're setting the bar high for all of us.

From Steve on Fri, May 04, 2012 at 16:15:16 from 66.87.66.230

Scott, Lulu, Walter, Rob, Dan, Scott E, and everyone else I missed during the last week I waa gone, thanks! I've decided to read all your comments after every race I do that falls apart, or weeks when I can't run for some injury or another.
