Little late this morning and missed my warm up totally, but since it was 15 degrees I didn't really care.  It really was a beautiful day though.  It was fun saying Hi to everyone from the blog for the first spring race and then it was time to get to work.  I wanted a 5:40 pace today and not a stupid race like the ones I keep running, a good tempo run before Boston.  By 3/4 mile I was feeling the altitude.  I just do too much training at sea level right now.  I think the race is at about 6,400 feet and I was winded already.  James M. was loping along side me like it was a Sunday afternoon jog in the park.  I was kind of stiff and didn't want to spend 13 miles feeling like that so I picked up the pace to 5:20 and stayed there for the next three miles, trying to shake it out.  I began to catch up to the lead group of three, but about 6 miles into it I felt like they were probably going to hold that pace and ran my own race.  When the course leveled out I began to catch my breath and felt much better than the start.  I could then just focus on hitting the 5:40 and relaxing.  Somewhere in there 7 Rossy cruised by me and slowed enough to say Hi for a minute and he was gone.  Smooth race and the first half in a long time that was just fun.  This course has never been one I enjoyed.  Just a few seconds fast on pace in average, but it was due to shaking out some on those first miles.

Awesome talking to Albert, Ben, Riley and Rossy together after the finish.  These guys are in the groove.  Ben and Riley especially are hitting some really neat workouts.  There's some cool stuff coming from these two this year.  James and Allie are fun as usual, and James had some great ideas for running parts of Bostson that had me worried.  Thanks!

Now heading up to White Pine trail above Tony Grove for an afternoon of Cross Country skiing.  Word is 8" of fresh powder that's melting fast...

Sorry Riley, my spell check changes your name to Ryan and now I'm on my phone I can't edit entries.

Great race up there. Sounds too cold... At least you didn't have to fight a heavy head wind. That seems to be the norm for the Striders half.

Great race this morning! You're looking strong for Boston. You'll be right back down at sea level. Do you have a goal you're shooting for at Boston? Seems like you're in a position to PR if things go well.

Another great race. Top master in the State for sure. Nice seeing you again!

Good race Steve - sounds like you did this right. Solid tempo effort. Good thing Boston is at sea level :-)

Steve: "Ryan"=Riley Cook

I hope this means that you are in 2:28 shape for Boston!

Also, have you seen me run in the park on Sundays? Not pretty.

great race today, steve. nice seeing you and best of luck at boston!

Excellent race! Looks like another year of circuit domination for you.

I'm jealous of your Boston prep and wish mine was going half as well and also that I had your enthusiasm.

Steve, Great performance as always! Jeez you have really set the bar for the rest of us.

Superfly, that's true. But this course is always slow for me. First time I ran it smart and survived it.

Scott, I don't know about a goal with a specific number. 2:30 is a goal I've been chasing for a while and I want it on a course like Boston or some other realistic race. I'm not at that speed right now.

Mark, the masters in this state are some of the best, and some of the most unpredictable. I'm not the top by a long shot, but thanks. I'm actually pretty surprised by the running that you are doing right now. Wish lived a bit further south and could run with you guys.

Jake, it's a small hope I have, the sea level thing. I just have never felt it was much of an advantage as slow as I run marathons.

Fiddy, Come on, I know! You don't get a guy's name wrong that kicks your trash in every race. The only race I can get him on is the Alta Peruvian. that's just because he's not dumb enough to windmill down a mountain at breakneck speed.

Rob, I'm not catching much of the circuit. Missed you this week, I finally had time to run. Get off vacation and get busy living!

Tara, I know. It makes the race.

Steve, I was excited when I heard you would be running the circuit. You have some pretty neat speed.

So ... when I am stiff I just need to pick up my pace to a 5:20??? Good to know!!! ;)

Congrats on a fantastic race.

Hope you had a great time skiing. :)

Great race, looking forward to running with you in Boston.

Some tough master's team in Boston this year!!!

See you Sunday! Call me when you get there to hook up for the expo and dinner.

From Steve on Mon, Apr 09, 2012 at 16:52:39 from 66.87.108.230

Jeff, that's what they are thinking. Who's this team from the West? Just wait until I show up in Corall 1 with a pack of Peeps, wearing board shorts and a Tough Mudder tshirt.

Teena thanks, hope your taper is feeling good. Seriously, sometimes I have to shake it out on a run. I feel this a lot on tempo runs. When it's really hard to hold pace and I'm about to slow down, I'll do the opposite for a mile or two and it is much easier to hold pace when you fall back to it. Runners on the blog are way more numbers oriented than I am also, so if I post that I ran a mile faster, someone always posts, what was the pace? Especially workouts where I generally had no idea of exact repeat times or long run pace. Probably been good for me to watch.

The skiing was great. Xcountry relaxes you so much after a morning race. Last of the season

From Rossy on Wed, Apr 11, 2012 at 11:50:14 from 166.250.0.192

Again, nice race Steve and it was great to finally meet the really fast guy that always runs just in front of me at the start and is always way ahead of me by the end of the race. Also, just talking to you gave me some cofindence that I can still improve my marathon PR. We'll see if I can hold a nice pace for the second 13.1. I'll be cheering for you on Monday, best of luck and enjoy Boston!!!
